Humans in the Loop is excited to announce that we will be partnering with the Partnership on AI (PAI) for a series of pilot studies applying best practices in data enrichment work and measuring their impact.
More about PAI and what they do
PAI is an organization that works together with experts on AI from different fields – academia, research, civil society organization, in order to improve the understanding of AI’s long lasting impacts. Humans in the Loop was part of a working group which contributed to their white paper Responsible Sourcing of Data Enrichment Services which aims to critically evaluate the impact of the AI industry’s current sourcing practices on data enrichment workers and explore practices the industry can adopt to improve worker well-being.
The whitepaper draws heavily from a series of interviews and workshops that PAI conducted in 2020 with HITL and other members of the AI enrichment ecosystem. These interviews have helped them gain an in-depth understanding of the matter resulting in the creation of the following graphic which explores in detail the impact of higher-ups on the individual impact worker. The graphic below, produced by the Partnership on AI, provides a list of some of the consequences that the workers have to face, and provides context for how various decisions made by AI practitioners can impact working conditions.
Despite the reliance of the AI industry on data enrichment services, the working conditions of the workers providing them do not get enough attention. The whitepaper seeks to right this wrong by exploring new practices that can improve worker wellbeing. As a continuation of the whitepaper, PAI is seeking to collaborate with different companies in the industry willing to adopt these practices. Humans in the Loop is proud to be contributing to this effort by engaging our current and new clients.
What this means for us
The aim of the project is to find the unique way in which each client can improve the working conditions of data enrichment professionals. Measuring the effect those changes have on the workers’ wellbeing and also on the client’s ROI, will be crucial for the success of this project. PAI hopes that they can make the process of adopting these practices easier for other organizations by creating a large resource of online case studies.
In HITL we have always aimed to provide the best conditions for our аnnotators and by participating inthese pilots, we aim to actively engage our customers in designing and promoting better practices for everyone in the industry. Reach out to us if you want to be part of the pilots!
